Last night the Flames gave up the first goal of the game for the first time in as long as I can remember. Maybe we should get back into the Delorean and get it up to 88 mph ... nope, I'll just use the internet. It was on October 16th against the Edmonton Oilers. Damn. That was almost a month ago; at the very least it was a span of 9 games. What does that mean? Who knows. The Flames are an enigma, wrapped in a riddle, rolled in a slice of bacon right now. There was no way I (or most Flames fans) thought they could turn it around and win after Christ Stewart scored less than two minutes into the third period. But they did.
Credit to B Sutter for changing up his lines and uniting David Moss, Mikael Backlund, and Niklas Hagman together though. That was very Keenan-esque of him, seeing as despite moving Morrison from wing to center and then back to wing, and dropping Jokinen off of the first line (after forcing that combination for an eternity) are the only real line changes he's made all year (edit: I just realized that we're only a handful of games into the season and not an "eternity"; so, why is everyone getting on Iginla already again?).
The Flames won, and this has to be a huge boost for the confidence, and their belief in themselves on the offensive side of the puck, but let's be honest, with Henrik Karlsson, aka The Calgary Tower, I don't think the game stays close enough for a third period comeback to matter. Kipper stood on his head making some great saves in the second period to keep the game close.
And speaking of Kipper's head, memo to the NHL forwards (and Ville Nieminen, cause I have a soft spot for that knucklehead) there are no more penalties for running the goalie. Ever. Ask Pete DeBoer. No more penalties. It is A-Okay ... great you fixed the head shots and had a meeting to discuss how the All-Star team should be selected (huge joke by the way) and yet you don't focus on this issue ... great meeting of the minds on that one.
Anyway, the Flames play this Friday and Saturday against pacific division foes, the Coyotes and the Sharks. Neither team is lighting it up yet, so the Flames need to go in and take advantage, coming home with these four points, so they don't fall too far back of the top 8 spots. Apparently you just need to get in, cause anything can happen. Don't bother putting together a good, young, fast team. Just get in.
