The Weekly Roundup

We are introducing a new segment to The Sports Roundup entitled ‘The Weekly Roundup,’ or TWR for short. These weekly briefings will ‘roundup’ the week that was in sports and break down any stories that interest our readers. Feel free to comment, suggest, bicker, or criticize any of our posts because we want to hear from you.

So without further ado, it’s time to roundup the wagons, the horses and all of your cattle because here we go!

Giddy-up!

Old Man River

• In Flames land this week, the Flames re-signed Craig Conroy to a two way contract. An insurance deal for the Flames, for a 38, soon to be 39, year old center who scored all of three goals last season. With Langkow injured and unlikely to start the season, the move gives the Flames a veteran presence at the pivot position. He is 9 games away from reaching 1000 career NHL games. This signing gives the Flames six natural centers - Langkow, Jokinen, Stajan, Conroy, Stone, and Backlund- under contract. Stone, Backlund and Conroy are all two way deals.
The Conroy signing bugs TWR because it puts yet another elderly player in front of a young prospects chance to play in the show. Wouldn’t you rather see Brett Sutter, a guy who would provide tons of energy, center the fourth line, rather than CC? The youth movement has taken place in the NHL; except in Calgary where Darryl likes them old and he likes them slow.

Who Cares?

• The Kovalchuk saga continued when his contract was officially rejected by a third party arbitrator. This has quickly become the most trying sports topic of the summer; only behind whether or not Brett Favre will retire for the 59th time or play at the age of 84. In either case TWR is tired of hearing about both subjects and can’t wait for both seasons to start so we can talk and read about something more exciting than where Favre was seen last. Report is he was last seen entering an IHOP for the early bird special.

To Trade or Not to Trade?

• Leafs GM Brian Burke apparently didn’t receive the right offer for Tomas Kaberle. He said he received offers from numerous teams, but none of them were good enough and thus Kaberle remains a Leaf. Now I know some Leafs fans that are quite unhappy with the result but you have to appreciate a GM who thinks through the situation instead of just acting on impulse. Take notes Darryl because that’s what you do. You let teams know the player is available and then you wait for teams to come to you. If you had done that with Dion, maybe the Flames would have actually received equal skill in return. Instead the Flames are left with spare parts, and the Leafs have a new Captain. Not that I was the biggest Dion lover, but he was an extremely marketable asset. Savvy managing Darryl.

Running in Quicksand

• The Blue Jays keep on rolling along winning two of three from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim California of the United States of America on the weekend. However, they still remain nine games back of the division lead and the wild card. Hope…it’s a terrible, terrible thing.

• Side Note: Lyle Overbay was put on waivers this week and will likely be traded to free up some cash. Although his defensive game will be missed, and his bat has come alive these past few months, it is time to get some youth over at first base. I am sure the Jays can move Lind to 1st and rotate in a different DH. Why not give rookie sensation J.P.Arencibia more time at the dish to show off his power? Also Cito Gaston has confirmed that he will retire after this season as the Jays Manager. Say it isn’t so Cito?

The Church Gets Some Coffee

• In one of the strangest moves of the NFL off-season, San Francisco 49’ers backup running back Glen Coffee packed his bags and not only left training camp, but left football for good. He decided to leave football to join the priesthood. When asked if he would ever return to football, he simply responded, "No, man. I've already told Christ it's time to go. I've already rung the bell. That's not going to happen."

Apparently, nobody F$%&s with the Jesus.

Johnson Grounded

• Is it a bunker? Is it not a bunker? Is the PGA to blame? Should they even be ruled as bunkers? A decision, ruling and missed opportunity that will be talked about throughout the annals of time in the golfing and sporting world. Dustin Johnson, TWR feels for you, but congrats in handling it like a pro. Would if this had been Tiger? He would have thrown a hissy fit!

• By the way, Martin Kaymer also won his first major.

Stamps Destroy Eskimos

• It’s always nice to beat up on anything from Edmonton. With the 56-15 domination at McMahon Stadium the Stamps cemented their status as not only the best in the west, but the best team in the entire CFL.
That’s a roundup folks.
