The Weekly Roundup- September 7th, 2010

From the latest news on the Flames to Americans blaming violence on hockey, here is the latest Weekly Roundup!

Giddy Up!

Langk You Very Much

• It looks like Daymond Langkow is back skating and could be ready for the start of training camp, which surprised a lot of people in Calgary. With Langkow near 100% healthy, this could axe the thought of storing his contract on the Long Term Injury Reserve, thus forcing the Flames to make a move. Ken King mentioned that he thinks they will move a defenceman. (In case you missed it, King responded to my blog on Thursday, here is the link to that blog :http://www.thesportsroundup.com/2010/09/ken-king-respondsquickly.html) This should mean that training camp will be an all out war.

• Prediction: Cory Sarich won’t be a Flame when the season begins.

Tiger Lurking

• A big week for Tiger Woods; he finalized his divorce with Elin Nordegren and he had his most successful week on the golf course in a long time.

• Coincidence? I think not.

• He advanced to the 3rd stage of the FedEx Cup playoffs next week in Chicago, where they will play Cog Hill; a course that Tiger has won 5 different tournaments on.
• Also, he will most likely be picked by Corey Pavin later today as a captain’s pick for the US Ryder Cup team.

• Here is your Tuesday morning headline: “Leaders are not out of ‘Woods’ yet; and with Tiger officially single neither are any waitresses, strippers or porn stars within a 5 mile radius.”

From Russia with Money

• The saga that plagued the NHL all summer is finally over; and not a minute too soon. Ilya Kovalchuk’s deal will be for $100 million dollars over 12 years and carry a cap hit of $6.67 million dollars annually.

• This situation helped the NHL solve the ever growing issue of long term contracts and front loaded contracts. An issue that is good in the long term for the league, but something that should have been thought of when the CBA was being signed back in 2005.

• Whenever the NHL realizes their mistakes, they find any way to fix them and usually in their favour.

• Once again the NHL continues its tyrannical reign over the NHLPA.

Hockey vs. Baseball

• This past week, Washington Nationals outfielder Nyjer Morgan ran over Florida Marlins catcher Brett Hayes in an effort to score a run; hardnosed baseball or dirty play?

• Hayes dislocated his shoulder and is now out for the season. The next game, Morgan was plunked by a pitch with the score 14-5 and three innings later he had a ball thrown behind him. He then charged the mound and started a bench clearing brawl and was later suspended 8 games for his actions.

• There was an article in USA Today blaming the brawl on Morgan’s upbringing with hockey. You have to be joking, right?

• Once again, Americans are taking any chance they can to bash hockey and frame it as a game built for thugs and lowlifes. TWR was even offended by how they refer to Saskatchewan in this article; pretty bush league reporting from a top ranking news organization.

• Read the article here: http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gameon/post/2010/09/nyjer-morgan-hockey-brawl-nationals-marlins/1

College Stars That Flop

• What do Matt Leinart and Troy Smith have in common? TWR will save you the suspense: they both won the Heisman Trophy for Most Outstanding Collegiate Football Player, and they both were dropped from their respective NFL teams this past week.

• Leinart was touted to be the saviour of the Arizona Cardinals back when he was drafted 10th overall in 2006. He was subsequently beat out by Kurt Warner for the starting job and most recently replaced by the mediocre Derek Anderson, ending Matt’s time in the desert. Leinart has just signed a one-year deal with the Houston Texans to be the backup to Matt Schaub; better than nothing.

• Smith, a former dual threat quarterback/wide receiver for Ohio State University, was let go by the Baltimore Ravens this week. The Ravens thought Marc Bulger would be a better backup to Joe Flacco. Now, that’s really got to hurt.

• Just add another couple of players to the ever growing list of college stars to flop in the pros. Ryan Leaf would be proud.

``Houshamanzilly...Championship! ``

• The once sought after wide receiver T.J. Houshmanzadeh, or Houshamanzilly as he like to be called, was cut by the Seattle Seahawks a year after signing him to a massive five year deal with $15 million dollars guaranteed. In a similar situation in Tampa Bay, the Bucs dropped Michael Clayton two years after signing him to a ridiculous $24 million dollar five year contract; $3.5 million dollars guaranteed.

• Money well spent.

Classic? Barely

• When the opposing Coach is near tears in the press conference after the game, you know you have done something right. The Stamps have outscored the Edmonton 108-20 in their two match-ups this year. Nuff said.

And one last comment on society. Do guys who wear ‘Ed Hardy’ clothing actually realize what they look like? Right, I didn’t think so.

Predicition: After Cory Sarich has left, you'll be calling within the month to come and visit him.
