Tiger's Ex-Caddy and Other Summer Musings

Tiger has the club in his hand. You are
holding a god damn pin.
By Derrick Newman

Watching the summer go by at the speed of light I have been unable to blog as much as I would like but over the past few days I’ve seen some things that I just can’t keep quiet on...so here are my thoughts in written form.

The Caddy

Steve Williams. Oh Stevie boy. You are a true champion.

Let me get this straight.

Did YOU actually win 145 tournaments? Have YOU won 13 majors? Have YOU won eight times at Firestone? Was that YOU winning by 15 shots at Pebble Beach?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I could have sworn that was Tiger Woods winning, not you.

You were carrying the guys F#%king bag! Get over yourself, please.

Caddies have two jobs in this world.

1. Carry the bag

2. Keep your mouth shut.

You were able to do one thing correctly, but that’s about it. You thought you were bigger, and better, than the man you were working for, and that unfortunately is not the case.

Just like senior citizens... see here...

Caddies can still serve a purpose. Yes on tour they can be a big help to the player in keeping him focused on the task at hand, but in the end, there is only one guy swinging the club. There is only one guy making the putts.

Also, remember that without the guy hitting the golf ball, you do not have a job sir.

As much as I have come off my “I Love Tiger” bit over the last half year due to his complete and utter disrespect for the media, I still side with him on this affair. He is in charge when it comes to choosing who he wants working for him. If he feels Stevey has run his course and is in need of a change, then so be it. He is the boss, not the other way around. A caddy can’t fire his player.

He only made Williams the richest sportsmen in all of New Zealand for carrying a freakin’ bag.

Where does Williams get off? Oh yeah, and I’m sure winning the Bridgestone Invitational was much better than any of those 13 majors you have won while working for Tiger...yeah, and hooking up with the check out girl at Target was probably ten times better than the hummer you got from the pole dancer at Cheetahs.

As a Kiwi, how does it feel having the Australian flag on your back?

Yeah, that’s what I thought.

The Unknown Best

Raise your hand if you know who Yani Tseng is.

(scanning the room...still scanning...oh is that a hand...no, just stretching, ok....)

I’ll save you the Google search.

SHE is the number one ranked female golfer in the world and holder of five major titles including the recently completed British Women’s Open. At 22, she is the youngest player, male or female, to win five majors championships.

But the question remains, does anyone care?

The answer, for the most part, is no.

And that my friends, is the sad, pathetic state of women’s professional golf right now.

I don’t even care enough to keep writing on the subject. I simply wanted to see if ANYONE knew who she was. I’m guessing that I’m not alone.

The Blue Jays

I’ve joked with my friend (a non-baseball fan) for the past decade that this is the year that Jays will make the playoffs. Well, for the years where Riccardi was in charge I might as well have been hitting the crack pipe, because there was no possible way, with that guy at the helm, that this team had any hope of playing ball in October.

But things have changed.

Enter Alex Anthopoulos, or AA as he is known.

He has not only changed the way the team is managed, but he has changed the entire aura around the club.

Actual optimism is surrounding this franchise for the first time in almost two decades.

With the recent acquisition of center fielder Colby Rasmus at the deadline and the call up of the much heralded Canadian third baseman Brett Lawrie, the Jays are actually being talked about outside of Toronto for the first time in a LONG TIME as an actual TEAM TO WATCH.

They have three young starters in Ricky Romero, Brandon Morrow, and Brett Cecil that are really coming into their own. Romero was just named AL player of the week.

They have a young catcher in JP Arencibia who continues to improve game in and game out. Case in point: he leads AL catchers in HR’s and RBI’s since the all star break, despite a subpar batting average.

And of course, they have an all-star right fielder in Jose Bautista, who not only has lived up to hype, but has surpassed all expectations after last year’s breakout campaign.

He currently leads the league in HR, SLG% and OPS, while ranking in the top ten in RBIs. Maybe not a one hit wonder after all...

However, one glaring problem still lurks in the shadows of Rogers Centre: the bullpen.

Even with a five run lead going into bottom of the ninth the other night, I feared the worst.

There is no confidence in any of those arms.

Francisco, Rauch, Janssen, Camp, Tallet, etc. The list of un-inspiring names goes on and on. The pen has blown 19 saves this season, which leads the American League. Maybe leads is not the word I’m looking for.

It’s the one thing left that needs to be rectified in order for this team to take the next step.

Everything else is taking shape.

MLB is talking about adding another wild card spot to the postseason in 2012, and even if they don’t the Jays have the best opportunity they’ve ever have of knocking the Yanks or the Sox off their perch.

All the stars are aligning.

AA, it’s your move.
